The win at Joshua's Creek Arenas gave Oakville a 3-1 victory in the best-of-five series. The Buzz will meet the Akwesasne Indians in the Eastern Conference semifinal. Matt Anderson, Tyler O'Brien and Ryan Smith each scored twice and Nate Braniff had a goal and three assists for the Buzz. With the score tied 3-3, Mathew Dilella connected in the final minute of the first to give Oakville the lead. The Buzz then scored three times, two of them by Anderson, in the first four minutes of the second period to take a 7-3 lead. Austin Redding and Ben Heidecker each had three assists for Oakville and Jaden Walcot had two. The first two games in the bestof-five series against the Indians are in Akwesasne Saturday, July 9 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 10 at 2 p.m. The series switches to Oakville's JCA for games on Friday, July 15 at 7:30 p.m. and, if necessary, Saturday, July 16 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 17 at 2 p.m. The two teams met once this season with Akwesasne winning 11-10. The two teams will reconvene at Oakville's Joshua's Creek Arenas tonight (Thursday) for Game 2 of the series at 7:30 p.m. The opening game was played after the Beaver's press deadline. Game 3 is back in the Six Nations' home arena in Caledonia on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Jr. C Buzz finished the regular season in sixth place, losing a tiebreaker with Brantford. Both sported 7-8-1 records in the nineteam West Division. Six Nations finished third with a 10-5-1 mark to gain home-rink advantage against Oakville. The Buzz wrapped up its regular-season schedule with a 9-5 loss to Halton Hills on June 26. A win or a tie would have clinched fifthplace for the Buzz Brazdeikis leads U17 Canadians to fifth at FIBA Ignas Brazdeikis of Oakville led Canada to a 99-68 win over France on Sunday, giving the Canadians fifth-place at the FIBA under-17 men's basketball championships. The Canadians reached the quarter-finals of the tournament before losing their only game -- 80-74 -- to the eventual silver-medal winners from Turkey. The U.S. thrashed the Turks 96-56 in the gold-medal game. Canada followed the defeat with two convincing wins in classification games to determine fifth through eighth place. Before beating France, Canada whipped Australia 96-58. Brazdeikis lead his team in points with 26 and rebounds with 10 in the win over France, which finished sixth. Burlington's Simi Shittu led Canada in assists in the win over Australia and in rebounds with 11 against the Dominican Republic in a 79-52 Round of 16 victory. Brazdeikis was Canada's top scorer against the Dominicans with 15 points.
