www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, July 14, 2016 | 12 Oakville grandmothers walk the walk by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff They took 32.6 million steps, walked 24,872 kilometres -- all to raise much needed funds for African grandmothers who care for their grandchildren, orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Oakville-based Oomama teamed up with Bronte Grandmothers for Africa to host the virtual Canada-wide Stride to Turn the Tide walk -- the virtual version being a new twist on an annual fundraiser that supports the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF). The fundraiser, which ran from January through June, encouraged participants to track their daily steps and distance while collecting pledges from family and friends. The groups had a goal of `virtually walking' from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Gaborone, Botswana, with stops at all the cities where the SLF partners with organizations to assist grandmothers and the children in their care. The cumulative distance is 10,254 kilometres. Earlier this month, the groups hosted a celebration party to highlight the success of the Stride to Turn the Tide walk participants who went above and beyond by not only walking across African cities, but also to St. John's, NL and then to Oakville. In total, $18,250 was raised for the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which invests the money directly at the community level, with grassroots organizations that provide grandmothers and the children in their care with support that include food, educational supplies, uniforms and school fees, medical care, HIV counselling and testing, adequate housing and bedding, counselling and support groups, home visits, and much more. Peggy Brightwell was recognized for walking the farthest, covering 1,453 kms, as the Virtual Stride to turn the Tide was celebrated recently. As a group, oomama and Bronte Grandmothers' members covered 24,872 kms (virtually walking a trail over all the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) projects in Africa and more. They raised $18,130 for SLF. | photo by Nikki Wesley Oakville Beaver Trafalgar Historical Society hosting series of events The Trafalgar Township Historical Society has several upcoming events.
