Oakville issues partial fire ban, Region voluntary water restrictions Oakville Fire recently issued a partial fire ban on open burning. That means, while it forbids open-air burning of brush on rural lands, residents can still barbecue and use outdoor fireplaces and fire pits. But they are required to have a water source nearby. Despite a few showers and less humidity expected over the weekend, more heat and humidity are expected again next week. Grass is very, very dry in the wake of a string of days of sunshine and soaring temperatures. The partial ban will remain in effect until the fire department issues a notification of it being lifted. "The lack of rain and high temperatures is a risky combination when it comes to fire, and the partial ban will be in effect until these conditions change," said Glenn Barwell, public education officer with Oakville Fire in a media release Thursday (July 7). The restriction includes open-air burning of brush on farms and agricultural lands. For those with outdoor fireplaces, barbecues, and other open burning devices or fire pits, they can continue to be used, however people must keep a hose or another water source nearby and readily available, Oakville Fire states. The department also warns people to never leave a fire unattended and ensure it is tion at 905-338-4404. · · · With the summer's hot, dry weather becoming more frequent recently, Conservation Halton and Credit Valley Conservation are calling on residents to voluntarily conserve water in order to avoid a complete ban. The Halton Region has issued a Level 1Blue Water Restriction, which means residents are asked to voluntarily follow the odd/even watering schedule. Properties with odd address numbers water on odd numbered calendar days and properties with even address numbers water on even numbered calendar days. Halton is also asking residents to only water between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., and 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Halton Region continually monitors the water system to ensure that adequate water is available for domestic uses, and for firefighting, for all Halton Region residents and businesses. The Region employs a numeric colourcoded system that indicates the extent of any restrictions on outdoor water use deemed necessary. Factors such as water demand, water storage levels, stream flow and groundwater levels and weather patterns are considered when setting the appropriate alert or outdoor water use restriction level. Regional staff say water conservation is always important this time of year when consumption rates are higher than any other season; it is especially important in residential areas supported by municipal well-based systems. Residents are asked to conserve water by sweeping driveways rather than using a hose, refraining from overwatering lawns and gardens, using a pool cover and ensuring any irrigation systems are operating efficiently.
