Ten-year-old discus thrower sets provincial tyke record Caitlyn Thompson set a provincial discus record at an international meet at York University. The 10-year-old established a new Ontario tyke girls' record, topping the old mark by more than half a metre at the 6th Annual Flying Angels Invitational, which drew competitors from Jamaica, Bahamas, Barbados, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. That earned Thompson a second-place finish in the atom division (there wasn't a tyke division at the meet). Thompson continued her impressive showing by taking 22 seconds off her previous best in the 800m to finish third behind a pair of runners from New Jersey. Her time of 2:58.54 also ranks as the third best time in her division in Ontario this year. She set another personal best with a leap of 6.60m in the triple jump to win her third medal of the meet. Thompson's performance highlighted a perfect 10-for-10 showing by Athletiques International members achieving person- al bests. Grace Cooper, 13, also picked up three personal bests and three bronze medal in the senior girls' 200m hurdles (31.56), discus (19.36m) and triple jump (9.87m). Twelve-year-old Breagha Sharpe established new personal marks and won medals in the discus (14.13m), 800m (2:55.79) and triple jump (8.12m). Ben Cooper, 13, earned a new best time in the senior boys' 800m for the fourth meet in row, earning a bronze in a time of 2:36.85. Diaper deal lets Oldershaws sleep through the night By Steve Milton Hamilton Spectator Burloak Canoe Club's Mark Oldershaw says he'd "never really heard of Facebook chats," but now he's being paid to do them. The third-generation Olympian is headed to his third Olympics in August hoping to repeat his medal performance at London four years ago when he became the first of the five Oldershaws who've paddled at the Games to reach the podium. Oldershaw's wife, Olympic swimmer Annamay Pierse, gave birth to their first child, Josephine, 11 months ago and domestic products giant Procter & Gamble approached him to endorse Pampers. Because this generation of new parents is so new-media-savvy, all of his work for P&G has been online. "When they first approached me about diapers, I thought it was because I'm one of the oldest guys on the team," laughs Oldershaw, 33. "They sought me out. They knew I had a new baby. They have a `Thank You, Mom' campaign but they also wanted to show that fathers are involved, too. "We did some Facebook live sessions and some interviews. Just knowing that Josephine can sleep through the night wearing Pampers just helps me sleep through the night." And that's imperative for a world-class athlete. Having a wife and family is the biggest change in Oldershaw's life since he won the bronze medal in the brilliantly engaging C-1, 1,000-metre final at the 2012 Games. "I think it's made me more organized for sure," Oldershaw says of fatherhood. "Just planning stuff out. We had to sit down and make sure it was not going to affect me, that I could train fulltime. One of the things Annamay and I talked about was that I can't do those night shifts. I have to sleep for training, rest is so important. And luckily Annamay stepped up and said, `I can take her for this year, throughout the night.' "I'll have some debts later on, for sure. "The best thing about (fatherhood) is just stress relief. It's an escape from training: we're out there so much, we're on the water so much, especially in an Olympic year. I'm still focused on the Olympics but I get to go home to this beautiful smiling little girl (who) just wants to play with anything that's in front of her. " It was a long and stressful spring for Oldershaw -- and any Canadian who was trying to make the Olympic canoe or kayak team. The Canadian qualification system changed from previous Games, and kept athletes on tenterhooks. But Oldershaw knew he'd landed a berth in Rio by the time he left a gruelling three-month camp in Florida for the two World Cups in Europe. He finished seventh in each of them, but then won the 500m race -- a non-Olympic distance -- in the second Cup. Getting back in the water with Scott (his father and coach) and Larry Cain, he says, "was the best thing I've done." "I've really improved in the last three weeks. I've re-found my stroke. It's just a feeling thing. Just small changes." This is likely Oldershaw's last Olympic hurrah, although he hasn't ruled out staying in competitive paddling for a while after Rio. "I feel like our family is a big part of Canadian paddling so I'm not only competing for Canada, I'm competing for the Oldershaw name. "It's a big part of who I am." · Read full story at bit.ly/29BESLh General $8.50 | Children & Seniors $6.50 | All seats Tues $5.00 ShOWTiMES fOR July 15 - 21 Ghostbusters PG Fri 10:45, 1:30, 4:15, 7:00, 9:35 Sat- 1:30, 4:15, 7:00, 9:35 Sun - 1:30, 3:40, 7:00, 9:35 Mon-Thurs - 10:45, 1:30, 4:15, 7:00, 9:35 The Secret Life of Pets G Fri, Mon Thurs 11:00, 12:30, 2:35, 3:15, 4:40, 6:40, 8:50 Sat, Sun - 12:30, 2:35, 3:15, 4:40, 6:40, 8:50 Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates 14A Fri-Thurs 1:00, 5:15, 7:30, 9:40 Finding Dory G Fri, Mon, Tues, Thurs 10:30, 12:00, 2:15, 4:30, 7:15, 9:30 Sat, Sun, Wed - 12:00, 2:15, 4:30, 7:15, 9:30 The Legend of Tarzan PG Fri, Sat, Mon, Tues 1:15, 4:00, 6:50, 9:15 Sun - 1:15, 4:00, 9:15 Wed 4:00, 6:50, 9:15 Thurs - 1:15, 4:00 Star Trek Beyond STC Thurs 7:00 171 Speers Road, Oakville (at Kerr St.) | 905-338-6397 (MEWS) www.film.ca OAKVILLE SOCCER CLUB CONSOLE IN Week Eight Photo Contest Winner: Photographer: John Angelis Age Division: BU17/18 Pizza Pizza & D'Orazio Infrastructure Group Oakville Beaver A Proud Sponsor of Oakville Soccer Club Sponsored by: $ SAVE $300 598 NEW!
