Extending turn lane helps traffic flow, not residents: Ross by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Thursday, July 14, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com An Oakville resident is upset that the Town of Oakville is extending the left-turn lane from Rebecca Street onto Third Line. Nicholas Ross, whose parents live on Rebecca Street, says the extension of the left turn lane, which turns north onto Third Line, will negatively impact the people living on that section of Rebecca Street. "For anybody who lives along there, it has become very difficult to get out of one's driveway," said Ross. "At least with the left-turn lane being short, there was usually only one lane of traffic to get out of. Now there is going to be two lanes of traffic to try to get through." Ross argues pulling into driveways in this area would also be more difficult. He condemned the Town for what he believes is a lack of public consultation on this matter, stating impacted residents only received a letter in the mail advising them of the coming project a few weeks before it is to commence. Town staff said the lane extension is taking place because the Rebecca Street and Third Line intersection has been identified as requiring safety improvements to reduce potential traffic collisions. Town staff noted that during a review of the For anybody who lives along there (Rebecca Street and Third Line intersection), it has become very difficult to get out of one's driveway. At least with the left-turn lane being short, there was usually only one lane of traffic to get out of. Now, there is going to be two lanes of traffic to try to get through. As a result, Town staff said, left-turning vehicles were blocking the through-lane and preventing others from getting through the intersection in a timely manner. They noted some drivers were also using the painted median as a way to access the left turn lane, leaving other drivers watching for vehicles in places they did not belong. Town staff noted they have reached out and would continue to be open to speaking with nearby residents to explain the need for the project and the resulting safety improvements. Ross argues the new lane extension could result in collisions. "All the cars on the north side of the street will also have to slow to turn right into their driveways. With the new eastbound turn lane, cars that pull around to pass residents will be moving directly into traffic moving eastbound," said Ross. Town staff said work on the left turn lane has been completed.
