Don't be afraid to hang up, verify your uncertainties: police continued from p.1 "They said it is a very serious issue," explained Trutnau. "She said they have gotten several hundred calls reporting these incidents within the last few weeks." An Oakville woman, who asked not to be identified, received a similar voicemail on her phone recently. "It's a very threatening, very intimidating call," she said. "If it was my mother picking up the phone, she would be sending them money. She's elderly... I'm really disturbed they can't seem to catch these culprits because they certainly need to be targeted and stopped." The scammers called her again last month and again threatened arrest if she did not pay them. "Now don't try to disregard this message and do return this call," says a recording, which the Oakville woman has kept. "If you don't return the call and if I don't hear from your attorney either, then the only thing I can do is wish you good luck." Unfortunately, not everyone who receives these calls reports them to police or simply deletes them. Last week, Halton police issued a press release noting three Halton residents had recently been victimized by this scam. They noted fraudsters have added a new twist to the con by demanding the victims attend a local store and purchase Apple iTunes 7 | Thursday, July 14, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The best practice with any telephone or door-to-door soliciting is to be very skeptical and cautious, never act based on someone's questionable demands on the other end of the line. A 75-year-old Burlington woman lost $5,100 when she was pressured into attending a local retailer to purchase a large quantity of iTunes cards. She was told she would be arrested if she did not comply. A 47-year-old Oakville woman lost $3,300 and a 52-year-old Georgetown man lost $2,000 to these tactics. Halton police are reminding residents to be mindful and suspicious of this fraud as the CRA would never call demanding immediate payment by phone.
