continued from p.1 Flynn said the $4.38 million would help the Province find new ways to make Ontario's workplaces safer. "The Ontario government is investing almost $4.5 million across the province through the Occupational Health and Safety Prevention and Innovation Program and the Research Opportunities Program. What we do with this money is we award it to community health centres, to university research teams, to newcomer centres and to many other important organizations," said Flynn. "What they help us do is find new ways and best practices that are going to save lives and reduce injuries in workplace accidents across this province." The Minister of Labour said the Province tries to focus its efforts where they are needed the most and where they will have the most impact. He noted about $66,000 would go to the Oakville-based Ontario Retirement Communities Association (ORCA) to fund the production of new and updated e-learning tutorials and resources for frontline staff in the retirement homes sector. The content of these tutorials will specifically address workplace mental health, injury prevention and specific issues around young and new workers. I think it is going to make a huge, positive difference for the residents, for the workers and for the families." ORCA President Sharon Henderson accepted the grant on behalf of the organization and talked with those present about the importance of the funding and workplace safety. "There are more than 700 licensed retirement homes in Ontario providing accommodation, care and services for more than 55,000 seniors. As the association represents more than 92 per cent of those homes, ORCA supplies our members with training and education that helps them meet provincial regulations, adopt best practices and promote quality and excellence in areas of our operations," said Henderson. "We know that employers, employees and organizations like ORCA must work together to ensure employee health and safety is a priority. It not only provides a safe working environment for our employees, but ensures our residents are living in a safe environment." Henderson said the retirement sector is growing rapidly to meet the needs of the aging population. She said there are currently 20,000 people employed in this sector in Ontario including personal support workers, cooks, maintenance professionals, servers, housekeepers, recreational experts and administrators. Henderson said all would be able to benefit from ORCA's e-learning tutorials. 3 | Friday, July 15, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville MPP and Ontario Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn announces a $4.38-million provincial investment to reduce work-related injuries, illnesses and fatalities during presentation at Delmanor Glen Abbey Retirement Community on July 6. | photo by David Lea Oakville Beaver nities in Ontario. "It is no coincidence that some of the most profitable companies in this province also have the best health and safety records and exactly the same business case can be made for mental health in the workplace," said Flynn.
