www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, July 22, 2016 | 24 Volunteers pack lunches to give back to community continued from p.23 The LITs, also, are either past campers or come from low-income families. They help staff teach the younger children life lessons and values that will help them now and into their future. Front Line Outreach, however, does more than just run summer programs, explained Shantz. It teams up with local church and community groups to run other events and programs, like weekly community barbecues that aim to connect with residents living in poverty with opportunities to lift themselves out of cycle. Katherine Power, Sodexo Canada's vicepresident of communications and corporate affairs, said Camp Dakota and other community programs and groups do so much in helping improve the lives of community members struggling to make ends meet. In Halton, the Feeding our Future program has teamed up with Food for Life to support not only Camp Dakota, run by Front Line Outreach, but also ArtHouse programs and Kerr Street Mission (KSM), among others. Power said volunteers meet at Appleby College every day to package lunches, which are then picked up by Food for Life volunteers and delivered to a pick-up location close to where each program is run or directly to the camps. Food is purchased with funds donated to Sodexo Canada's Stop Hunger Foundation, which runs a number of fundraising events and also gets sponsorship from its suppliers who either donate cash or products. While people may think Oakville residents are "well-off," Power said it's important for everyone to realize there are pockets of people who are struggling, despite appearances. She volunteers to package lunches because it's a great way to give back in the community in which she lives and works, while putting a smile on a person's face "who shouldn't worry about where the next meal is coming from."
