Film.Ca Cinemas to live broadcast The Tragically Hip's final show The Tragically Hip is coming to Oakville... well, sort of. Film.Ca Cinemas will be screening the live CBC telecast of the band's final show in Kingston, Ont., on Aug. 20. "We are very excited to bring this celebration of The Tragically Hip's music to Oakville so that it can be enjoyed the way it is supposed to be, together with other fans," said Jeff Knoll, CEO and founder of Film. Ca Cinemas. "As soon as we heard the concert would be broadcasted live across the country, we started looking into how we could show it here, so we are glad to have the permission of the band and the CBC." The Oakville theatre joins several other Canadian cities, such as Burlington, Hamilton, Halifax and Charlottetown, in bringing the concert "home" to its communities. The iconic Canadian band's lead singer, Gord Downie, announced in May he had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. The group takes on its final tour this summer across Canada, which kicks off Friday (July 22) in Victoria, B.C., and ends in Kingston -- Downie's hometown is Amherstview. The local live broadcast of The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration, begins at 8:30 p.m. and is expected to run until 11:30 p.m. Doors to the theatre, at 171 Speers Road, unit 25, will open at 8 p.m. Tickets are free, but a donation benefitting the charitable organization Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre (OPNC) will be accepted -- there is a suggested minimum of $10 per ticket. The event is presented under license from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and The Tragically Hip.
