www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, July 22, 2016 | 34 Buzz to face Gaels in East final continued from p.33 about them. The young guys, every year they step up." While veterans Renaud and Ryan Smith paced the offence with eight goals and 17 points each in the series, the Buzz got important contributions from Matt Anderson (five goals, 12 points) and Braniff. Braniff played in just three regular season games but has six goals and 21 points in six playoff games. The series might have been won at the other end of the floor, though. Akwesasne came in as the highest scoring team in the conference, averaging 13 goals per game in the regular season, but the Indians couldn't manage more than seven in a game against Buzz. Bailey Brown, in his second season with the team, but first as the starter, allowed only 26 goals on 171 shots in the series, posting a 6.50 goals-against average. "Our defence has been phenomenal all year," Braniff said. "We knew if the defence held up back there we would have a chance." "We knew it was going to be a war defensively," Renaud said. "We knew if our defence held us in, the offence had to step up and give us early leads. We just tried to beat them period-by-period." It was a successful formula as Oakville was outscored in just three of the 13 periods in the series, and one of those came after the Buzz had already built an 11-2 lead. Oakville now advances to play the Green Gaels in the Eastern Conference final. The series begins Saturday in Bowmanville and returns to Oakville Sunday for a 7 p.m. game at Joshua's Creek Arenas. The Gaels are the only other team to beat Oakville in a playoff series in the last six years, edging the Buzz 6-5 in the fifth and deciding game in 2013. Now Oakville has a chance to deliver a little more payback and advance to the league final for the first time in a decade. "It would mean a lot to us and to the franchise," Renaud said. "We haven't done it in my five years and the team hasn't played for the Founders (Cup) since 2006, so it's long overdue." Gibson earns spot on Team Ontario Oakville's Ivy Gibson earned a spot on Team Ontario's under-16 women's volleyball team. The six-foot, 15-year-old outside hitter plays club volleyball for the Oakville Thunder. Each year the Ontario Volleyball Association invites top players to attend a week-long camp called the High Performance Centre (HPC). At the completion of the HPC training camp earlier this month, the Abbey Park student was selected for Team Ontario Black, which is currently competing at Volleyball Canada's National Team Challenge Cup event in Richmond, B.C. until Sunday. The HPC camp helps OVA athletes learn high-performance volleyball and prepares them for Team Ontario, Canadian Interuniversity Sport or Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association play. It also helps the OVA identify potential provincial-calibre athletes. This year's camp, held July 3-8 at Nipissing University in North Bay, was comprised of 48 females from across Ontario. The road to the HPC camp began in January when more than 500 athletes applied to be scouted for participation in the HPC selection process. Ivy Gibson Six Nations snap Rock's unbeaten streak with overtime win Six Nations rallied from a four-goal deficit in the third period to edge Oakville 11-10 in overtime, snapping the Rock's five-game unbeaten streak.. Oakville led 9-5 with 15 minutes to play but the Chiefs scored three times in five minutes to narrow the gap to one by the midway mark of the period. Six Nations then tied the game with 1:18 remaining. Jeremy Noble's third goal of the game in overtime put the Rock back in front in the extra period but the Chiefs scored a pair of unanswered goals to steal the victory. The Rock, 10-5-1, sit two points back of Peterborough in the Major Series Lacrosse standings while Six Nations is just one point back. Oakville will face an important final week in the MSL regular season as it could finish anywhere from first to fourth. The Rock play a home-and-home with Brooklin, which is just two points behind at 9-5-1. Oakville hosts Brooklin Monday at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre at 8 p.m. and then travels to Brooklin to close the regular season Wednesday. Six Nations, unbeaten at home this season, jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Rock came back with goals by Dan MacRae, Wesley Berg and Jeremy Noble to tie the game before the end of the period. It was the second time this month the teams had gone to overtime, with the last one ending in an 8-8 tie. Tradyo Turns Your Clutter Into Cash.
