Her roots in Nova Scotia span over 200 years and she fondly remembered her youth in Pictou growing up on her family farm. This is where she first developed her appetite for learning and education while attending a one room school in Lions Brook. Her love of learning continued at Dalhousie University where she received many accolades and scholarships, and completed, with distinction, a BSc in 1943. Helen met a dashing young naval officer from Oakville, John Blakelock, and after graduation they married in the Maritimes. At the end of WWII, Helen decided to move west with John and together formed a loving marriage in Oakville that produced 6 children, 11 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. Granny, Mum, or Helen was a devoted, generous, loving parent who instilled in her children a sense of wonder and curiosity. Her love of learning and family were infectious, and as a result her brood today enjoy a good book, spirited conversation, the beauty of nature, and the value of the almighty dollar. Her friends and family will miss Helen, but there is little doubt she will live on in many hearts and minds far longer than her 94 years. Special thanks to the exceptional staff at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and though she did not want a Funeral or Celebration of Life, donations in her honour, can be made to The Oakville Hospital Foundation.
