The heat is on -- and here to stay for the weekend by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Friday, July 22, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com · people who work in the heat; · people who exercise in the heat; · homeless people; and · people without access to air conditioning. Tips for preventing heat-related illness To prevent heat-related illness: stay cool, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, seek shade from the sun, spend time in airconditioned places, such as shopping malls and community centres, and drink plenty of cool liquids, especially water. If you or someone in your care experiences rapid breathing, headache, confusion, weakness or fainting, seek medical attention right away, advises Halton Region's Health Department. Residents should also call or visit friends or neighbours who may be at risk and never leave people or pets in your care unattended in a car. Here comes the heat -- again. We're back at it, with the hot, hot weather. For the third time this month, Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Halton that started Thursday (July 21) as a result of extreme heat and humidity expected for the region. A heat warning is issued when daytime temperatures are expected to reach at least 31C, with an overnight low of above 20C for two days, or when the Humidex is expected to reach 40C for two days. Those at risk These conditions pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion, Environment Canada states. Those especially at risk include: · older adults; · infants and young children; · people with chronic illnesses, such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses; As temperatures rise to the mid-30C and with humidity making it feel like 40C, everyone is looking for ways to beat the heat -- none more so, than the latest group of Oakville firefighter recruits. Just a week into their training they found out just how hot bunker gear can get on a hot, sticky summer's day.
