The Special Olympics `HoopIt-Up' tournament at St. Thomas Aquinas on April 8 was a big suc cess for Oakville as they went into the final and won. Under the guidance of coach Naveen Poonai, the Oakville Shooting Stars defeated the Hamilton Hawks 45-35 to earn the tournament victory. It was one of several tourna ments that are organized for the players each year. It was the last tournament of the season for the players, but Oakville still has some bounce left in them. The season will be closing out on May 8 when the Shooting Stars will be at their usual practice time playing a split-squad game and enjoying some pizza after. As an added bonus for the players, Vic Juzenas, coach of the girls' basket ball team at St. Thomas Aquinas, will be attending and giving out some pointers. This will take place at White Oaks South Campus in the large gym Monday, May 8, at 6:00 pm. Organizers are attempting to put together a big tournament in the fall because of the number of other teams getting started. Gold, bronze and silver at provincial championships The Oakville Gymnastic Centre power tumblers went hunting for medals at the provincial championships in Etobicoke recently and, together, they managed to bring back the entire set -- gold, silver and bronze. Ryan Webb, while splitting time between coaching and competing, earned three silver medals as he put up a suing of second place finishes right across the board -- in compul sory, optional and overall. He advances to next month's national power tumbling championships May 16th-21st at Humber College. The gold and bronze medals both belonged to Leslie-Anne Whitcomb. She finished third overall after a gold medal in the compulsory pass and sixth place in the optional. In level two, Kristie Stem finished 13 over all. In level one, both Jessica Brasil and Nicole lantorno narrowly missed medals. Brasil was fifth overall (4th in compulsory and 6th in optional) and lantorno was 6th overall (8th in compulsory and 4th in optional). Power Tumbling will be a demonstration sport at the 2004 Olympics and will be granted full Olympic status beginning in 2008. McCusker Zamuner comes up big in battle of Ontario After the first two games of the Battle of Ontario, which the Toronto Maple Leafs won by a combined 7-1 margin, the Ottawa Senators were looking for an offensive spark going into Monday night's crucial third game. And it was provided by none other than Oakville product Rob Zamuner with two goals to help Ottawa back into the series with a 4-3 win. Zamuner scored the second and fourth goals, the latter creating quite the controversy with M aple Leaf goaltender Curtis Joseph literally falling into the ref in an effort to protest alleged interference on the part of Daniel Alfredsson. The goal stood up and eventually won the game for Ottawa. The teams play game four tonight (Wednesday) in Ottawa with the Senators looking to even the series.
