The walk, which followed 5 and 10 kilometre routes, starting and finishing at Oaklands Regional Centre, attracted more than 500participants, despite cool cloudy weather. "I can't say enough about this walk," she com ments. "I was just overwhelmed with the response. It was just wonderful. I'm so pleased." The walk, a fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis research, "raised far more than we ever expected," she says, attributing its success to the hard work of some 50 to 55 volunteers. Toner-Burke got involved because her daughter has MS. Betty Culver, who also has MS, participated as both a volunteer taking phone calls, and as a `walk er,' taking her wheelchair around the 5-kilometre route, accompanied by her family. "It went very well. It was very well organized. And, it's unbelievable how much money was raised. It was really a success." The Oakville walk doubled expectations of rais ing about $50,000, says Caroline Horcher, a com munications officer at the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Ontario Division. "The $115,000 is unbelievable for the first year of a walk." Participants have a month to send in the remain der of their pledges, say organizers. Then, the final figure will be known. Top individual fundraiser is Bob Decker of O .A .C . See dealer for details Now instock at Oakville, honorary chair of the Oakville walk, who raised more than $30,000 and counting from corpo rate and other donations. Decker, whose wife has MS, has participated in the walk for seven years. His family has participated for six years. Decker has worked to bring the walk to Oakville, having partic ipated in both Mississauga and Burlington in the past. Across Ontario, a record $3.1 million was raised for MS research, by more than 30,000 participants in 37 Super Cities Walks held Sunday across the province. Funds raised from this event are used to provide ongoing MS services which include providing infor mation, educational programs, support counselling, equipment programs, social and recreation activi ties, and self-help groups, in addition to funding research. The MS Society of Canada invests nearly $5 million annually into research. MS is the most common central nervous system disease among adults aged 20 to 40 - mostly women - in Canada. The country has one of the world's highest prevalence rates, affecting almost 50,000 Canadians. MS costs the country almost $1 billion a year. Symptoms include vision problems, numbness, loss of balance, extreme fatigue, tremors, and paral ysis. The cause and cure for MS remains unknown. $ 5 a k -L A N D F O R D L IN C O L N 570T R A F A L G A RR O A D , »KVIllEatfeQ.E.W.
