Now comes the tough part--deciding what to do about child care. For many parents, this is a decision fraught with uncertainty, anxiety and guilt. And rightfully so, according to child care consultant Nicole Sutton, owner of Child Care Choices. A p p lic a t io n The follow ing establishm ent has applied to the A lcohol and G am ing Com m ission o f Ontario for a liquor licence under the Liquor Licence Act: Sutton, who is an early childhood educa tion specialist and a mother, says choosing a caregiver can be a scary and intimidating experience, and parents need to be aware of all the options available to them. Child Care Choices is a consulting and research company set up by Sutton to expressly help parents search for and find quality child care from a variety of sources. Regardless of the route parents ultimately choose-- be it a nanny, daycare centre or homecare--Sutton believes children deserve the best possible care their parents can find, while parents deserve the peace of mind of knowing they've achieved that. Child Care Choices, she stresses, is not affiliated with any agencies, daycares, nurs ery schools or homecare providers. It is there to assist parents in finding the childcare situ ation that suits their individual needs. Her personal background includes a diplo ma in early childhood education as well as many years working in the field, from being a nanny to teaching french at a Montessori school, supervising two nursery schools, coordinating after school programs, running her own homecare program, and most impor tantly, being a mother. To do that, Sutton's company takes parents through a five-step process, beginning with a simple questionnaire which assesses the fam ily's needs. Step two involves doing research based on those needs, leading to step three where parents are presented with a minimum of three options best suited to their particular child or children. During step four--often the most difficult phase for new parents--clients are assisted in interviewing potential in-home caregivers or visiting potential out-of-home caregivers. This is where the benefit of experience comes in, according to Sutton. Having per sonally worked in all comers of the childcare industry, she feels well equipped to help par ents evaluate various childcare settings and show them what to avoid. "I've been interviewed and I've done the interviewing. I've given tours and I've been on tours," adds Sutton. "As an employee, a supervisor, a pro gram coordinator and a mother, I have explored the childcare industry from all angles." At the completion of the process-- step five--clients are offered a general assess ment of the interviews or visits in order to help them make a final decision about a care giver. A subsequent follow-up visit is arranged with the family and the childcare provider to ensure everyone is satisfied. Parents can expect to pay approximately $350 for the complete service which breaks down to $99 for the initial consultation and assessment, $200 for the research and $50 for the finder's fee. Emergency temporary care can also be arranged by Child Care Choices. For a fee of $185 to the caregivers and a $50 finder's fee, Sutton will arrange to place your child with a reputable, registered and licenced caregiver. She stresses that this is not meant to take the place of the research process, but it does pro vide a temporary solution while the client looks for a permanent caregiver.
