Description
A photograph of the house built for the John Addison Smith family, foundry owners in Palermo, Ontario. Harvey and Ethel Smith raised their daughters, Erma Norine and Muriel Verna in this house. Harvey was a beekeeper.

On December 16, 1943, a fire caused about $200 damage to the house. The linked Acton Free Press/Oakville-Record Star reported that the barn on the Cramer farm to the east, the drive shed of the United Church, the Hager barn and the small Smith barn which housed the beekeeping equipment in the village were completely destroyed. Miss Ann Wood's house and the church had minor damage. The fire started in the Cramer barn and quickly spread west on the north side of the Dundas Highway because of strong winds and a lack of water. It took hours to control the fire using fire brigades from Trafalgar, Bronte, Oakville and Burlington, as well as using all nearby cisterns, wells and the fire truck tanks.

Some years later, the house was burned completely by fire. It had been sold by the Smith family by that time, and converted into a duplex with two families living in it. After this fire, it was rebuilt as a brick house set back further from the road. Click on "1958 Fire" for information about this devastating fire.

Getting enough water to put out such rural area fires was a problem.
Notes
You can see the reflection of what looks like a shed with a chimney in the big first floor window. Perhaps it was specifically for the bee business of Harvey Smith.
