CARP Halton helps plant trees on Highway of Heroes The Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) Halton Chapter and its partners announced recently they would spearhead a fundraising drive for the Highway of Heroes Living Tribute Project. The project, begun earlier this year, aims to plant 117,000 trees along and near the section of Hwy. 401, between Trenton and Toronto, designated as the Highway of Heroes. One tree will be planted for every one of Canada's war dead. Telling a story CARP representatives said this living, breathing memorial offers an opportunity to tell the story of Canadian veterans. It is intended to remind those who pass by of the great debt Canadians owe these departed soldiers. Greening the highway It is also seen as a great way to green North America's busiest transportation corridor -- re-naturalizing areas near the highway by planting trees that can help mitigate the impacts of climate change and support the local environment.
