Description
This original deed of land is carefully framed so we photographed it in the frame only. Several different photographs are included in this record so you can hopefully see it clearly. You can "zoom in" or "zoom out" to enlarge the images and you can click on the image itself to move it around.

First photograph shown is the document in the frame. Note the wax seal is missing although the ribbon is present. We have an example in our collection of one of these seals and it measures about 4" across and it is almost 1/2" thick.

Jacob Filman was living in the Township of Ancaster, Lincoln County. As had a lot of families, they came to the Glanford area in about 1776-80 from Pennsylvania.

The land granted was Lot 35 Con 1, North of Dundas. In present day terms, it is on the east side of Tremaine Road.

Note re Filman surname: This deed clearly shows it as "Filman". However, it was sometimes spelled as "Fillman" and land researchers for the Town of Oakville have recorded it as "Hillman or possibly "Hollman" - see the link to the historical value report on 3451 Tremaine Road and the 1806 map which does have it looking like "Hillman".

This property was later owned by Jason Vansickle (also sometimes spelled "VanSickle" or "van Sickle") as per Pope's 1877 map of Trafalgar Township.
Notes
Please note: the deed is dated December 14, 1807 in the 48th year of "our reign" - or the reign of George III. George III reigned from 1760-1820.

Francis Gore was Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1806-1811 and again from 1815-1817.
