www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, August 4, 2016 | 32 Virtual food drive strives to help put food on the table While many have a holiday in the summer, the season remains a time of stress and uncertainty with more than 36,000 people visiting local food banks and hunger relief programs every month in the community and an increase of 25 per cent in demand over last year. That's according to Food for Life, which is organizing a Virtual Food Drive to help ease the minds of those residents struggling to put food on their tables this summer. "The summer months can be very tough for families who no longer have access to school nutrition programs, and we want to do everything we can to ensure all children and individuals in our community have access to the healthy meals they need to thrive year-round," said Brenda Hajdu, Food for Life executive director. "We see a high demand for our services in the summer and we are very fortunate to have such a generous community supporting Food for Life. Without our corporate and individual donors, we would not be able to provide food for over 175,000 meals a month to those in need." Donations can be made at stophungerpains.ca or by phone at 905-635-1106. Each dollar donated helps provide food for three meals -- $25 can provide 75 meals, $50 funds a summer lunch program for 150 children, while $120 gives a family of four food for a month. Food for Life, a food recovery agency serving Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Georgetown and Acton, states more than one in eight people in Halton are battling hunger year-round and 35 per cent of the clients it serves are children. Food for Life provides food to more than 80 food banks and programs in Halton, such as ArtHouse, Kerr Street Mission, Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre, the Dar Foundation, Food 4 Kids and Support and Housing Halton. Those served include seniors on fixed incomes (16 per cent); the working poor/ employed individuals (20 per cent); and people with disabilities (25 per cent); among others.
