www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, August 4, 2016 | 36 Do not leave kids in the car alone: Children's Aid Society of Halton With Oakville, Burlington and Milton under their third heat warning this summer, the Children's Aid Society (CAS) of Halton is warning people not to leave children unattended inside a vehicle. "The facts are simple," the Halton CAS states in a media release. "The temperature inside a parked car can exceed 50C within 10-20 minutes on a typical Canadian summer day; opening the window(s) slightly does not reduce the temperature; heatstroke occurs at 40.5C; young children, especially infants, are three to ve times more sensitive to heat than adults and rising temperatures inside a car can cause a child to suffer from heat stress, dehydration, shock and, in extreme cases, even death." CAS advisories The local CAS is advising the general public to: · Never leave your children alone in a vehicle, even with the windows down; · If you have to leave your vehicle, even to run a quick errand, take your children with you; · Never use a vehicle as your substitute babysitter; · Do not leave your children in a vehicle without adult supervision for any length of time -- not even for a minute; · Make a habit of looking in your vehicle, front and back, before leaving -- look before you leave; · Lock your vehicle and secure your keys to prevent children playing inside it; Health K "Connected to your Community" D S H E L P I N G K I D S I The facts are simple. When to call 911 If residents see a child alone in a vehicle, they are urged to call 911 immediately. Give the location, vehicle licence plate information and approximate age/condition of child and wait for police and/or emergency services to arrive. Check to see if the vehicle is unlocked, open the doors and shield the windows with a blanket or safely remove the child from the vehicle. For more information, visit www. HaltonCAS.ca.
