Morningstar earns gold at Can-Am taekwondo Three members of Oakville's Morningstar Taekwon-Do won gold medals in the blackbelt division at the recent Can-Am Taekwondo Championships in Ottawa. Hammers win Grand Island tourney The Oakville Hammers recently won the Grand Island N.Y., Little League Machine Pitch tournament, defeating Central Amherst 11-5 in the championship game. The Hammers, a rookie ball (born 200708) tournament team, led the Grand Island event in runs with 96 in six games. The team came out flat in its opening game, losing 17-8 against MMBA, but bounced back to defeat the Amherst Bandits 29-4 and host Grand Island 11-10. To get to the final, the Hammers dumped North Tonawanda 19-4 in the quarter-finals and the ANJO Bombers of Lockport 11-5 in the semifinals. In the title game against Central Amherst, the Hammers were down 3-1 in the third inning but exploded for 17 in the next three innings (six maximum per inning). In other tournaments this season, the Hammers have been semifinalists in Erie, Pa., and third in Cleveland, where the boys were given a tour of Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians. The tournament, featuring a total of 16 school and club teams, was held from July 7-24. OCA won six of its eight games in Zone A preliminary competition to finish first in the division.
