P I C K E T I N B R O N T E OPP launch safety blitz by Steve LeBlanc and David Lea Metroland West Media and Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Thursday, August 4, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Legal Aid lawyers along with members of the Society of Energy Professionals picketed out front Ontario Labour Minister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn's constituency office on Lakeshore Road. The protest came the day after the Changing Workplace Review interim report on labour and employment law was released. | photo by Graham Paine Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) The OPP used the long weekend to kick off another safety blitz last Friday (July 29) in Halton. This one's focus is Move Over -- for stopped emergency vehicles and tow trucks -- as well as the Big Four when it comes to death/injury on our highways (distracted driving, impaired driving, aggressive driving and not using seat belts). On hand for the blitz was veteran officer Dan Pyrah of the OPP Port Credit detachment, a long-time Halton resident, who spoke about his life-altering collision in November 2010, when his cruiser was struck while parked on the shoulder of Hwy. 407 near Dixie Road. In a fully marked OPP Chevy Tahoe SUV , he was struck by a pick-up truck, with his police vehicle pushed 150 feet by the force of the impact. Pyrah suffered severe back injuries and is now relegated to desk work inside the detachment office. Also taking part in the event were volunteers and supporters of the Arrive Alive Drive Sober campaign who were out in full force at Oakville Place Friday morning to warn drivers about the dangers of impaired driving. The sober driving awareness blitz was scheduled ahead of the Civic Holiday weekend in hopes of preventing tragedy by heightening awareness of sober driving strategies such as Veteran OPP officer Dan Pyrah knows full well the dangers on the road. His cruiser was struck while on the shoulder of Hwy. 407 in 2010 and left him with life-altering injuries. | photo by Graham Paine Oakville Beaver planning ahead, staying overnight, calling a cab, taking public transit and using designated drivers.
