www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, August 5, 2016 | 30 Midsummer Reading Celebration encourages year-round literacy development O Registration for TD Summer Reading Club closes Aug. 18 akville Public Library hosted its third-annual Midsummer Reading Celebration at Glen Abbey Branch on July 27. The event was one of many free TD Summer Reading Club activities offered by the library, with several others scheduled for the remainder of summer. See www.opl.ca for a full program calendar. The library's Midsummer Reading Celebration welcomed parents, caregivers and children of all ages for a `wild'-themed storytime and other activities, such as face painting, fun with balloon animals and a jellyfish-making craft. Additionally, attendees were able to experiment with green screen technology and test out the library's Osmo gaming accessories. Oakville Public Library is committed to supporting parents and caregivers in developing their children's literacy skills yearround. Experts agree children who read during the summer gain more reading skills, while those who do not, often slide backward. The library's Midsummer Reading Celebration, offered as part of TD Summer Reading Club programming, encourages children to keep reading and learning throughout the summer by pairing fun and games with storytelling. "It's wonderful to see so many enthusiastic and eager readers at our branches," said Charlotte Meissner, Oakville Public Library CEO. "We are thrilled that so many children are setting their own reading goals and sharing their progress with us through TD Summer Reading Club." As of Wednesday (Aug. 3), more than 3,300 children have signed up as Summer Reading Club participants -- that number continues to climb every day. Parents can register their children for TD Summer Reading Club online and at all library branches until Thursday, Aug. 18. Want to stay connected with your library?
