Town asks residents to speak up on future of harbours The Town of Oakville is giving residents the opportunity to shape the future of Oakville's harbours by filling out a survey on their harbour experiences. The online survey, available at www.oakville. ca, asks people how often they visit the harbours, how they get there, what activities they participate in when visiting and invites suggestions for improving the harbours. People can also submit ideas for the future use of Bronte Marina, the former Metro Marine building at 2508 Lakeshore Rd. W., in Bronte. Those who participate in the survey get a chance to win a three-month Town of Oakville fitness pass. In addition to the survey, street teams are out interviewing people at various events and locations throughout Oakville this summer. Town staff says information gathered from the survey and interviews will help the Town develop its first Harbours Master Plan, to address both harbours under one unified vision and long-term strategy for harbour development and infrastructure. "The master plan is going to shape the future of Oakville's two iconic harbours, so it's essential that Oakville residents help shape the plan," stated Oakville Mayor Rob Burton in a press release. "Whether you're a boater, cyclist or simply someone who drops by with the family for ice cream, we want to hear from you." Along with determining the future use of Bronte Marina, the Harbours Master Plan will provide recommendations on improved public access, better connections to surrounding neighbourhoods, recreational amenities and priorities for both harbours and potential options for future harbour growth. If council decides at a later date to explore the possibility of a new marina, a future study, including an Environmental Assessment (EA), will be required. The team of consultants working on the Harbours Master Plan has interviewed residents from across town as well as key stakeholders and community groups, including residents' associations, Business Improvement Associations (BIAs), environmental and heritage groups, boating clubs and associations as well as the mayor and councillors. Two community workshops were held on May 3 and more public meetings are planned for the fall.
