Politicians and HCDSB representatives gathered at one of its two Welcome Centre locations at the Oakville high school on Nottinghill Gate to celebrate the occasion. The Centre offers outreach services for families new to Canada and Halton. The goal is to provide a smooth transition for students and their families to their new life in the community. Services include language and math assessments for children registered at an HCDSB school; assistance to students and parents with transitioning into our schools; and access to a settlement counsellor to provide support to the family. The other Welcome Centre location is in Milton at the Thomas Merton Centre for Continuing Education. They are co-funded by the HCDSB and the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The annual charity event, which will take place in Oakville Sept. 25 at Centennial Square (the corner of Lakeshore Road and Navy Street), is looking for male volunteers to register, collect pledges and then strap on a pair of hot pink high heels for a short walk in support of ending violence against women. Money raised will help fund the programs and services offered by the Halton Women's Place. The organization provides shelter and crisis services for physically, emotionally, financially and sexually abused women and their dependent children. The Oakville event begins at 10 a.m. with registration. The walk itself begins at 11 a.m. The Works Oakville will provide lunch for all walkers.
