The concert in Kingston, Ont. was broadcast and livestreamed on CBC. According to preliminary audience figures reported by CBC, The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration reached 11.7 million people Saturday (Aug. 20) night. In May, lead singer Gord Downie announced he had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. The iconic Canadian band embarked on its final tour earlier this summer, which kicked off July 22 in Victoria, B.C. with 15 sold out stops across Canada before the show in Kingston -- where Downie grew up in the suburb of Amherstview. Bringing the concert `home' Film.Ca was among a number of venues across Canada that brought the concert "home" to its communities. "We are very excited to bring this celebration of The Tragically Hip's music to Oakville so that it can be enjoyed the way it is supposed to be, together with other fans," said Jeff Knoll, CEO and founder of Film.Ca Cinemas in July. The Tragically Hip is projected live at a screening of the CBC's The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration at Film.Ca Cinemas in Oakville Saturday night. The band played their final show in their hometown of Kingston.
