This was evident at a Climate Change Consultation, hosted by Oakville MP John Oliver at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC) on Monday, Aug. 22. The town hall, which drew a crowd of approximately 140 people from Oakville and beyond, was part of the federal government's quest for views and suggestions from Canadians on how to address climate change and promote clean growth. "There was a very strong sense of passion, commitment and caring about where we're headed as a country and how we're managing climate change and how we're managing carbon and carbon emissions," Oliver told the Oakville Beaver following the forum. Moderated by Oakville Hydro CEO Rob Lister, the 90-minute gathering featured roundtable discussions with attendees sharing their ideas on two topics of their choosing at two different tables. Oliver said there was quite a "diverse" range of issues and different thoughts brought forward on how to deal with them. The main message he heard Monday was that "we need to get going." "We need to start to address climate change. We need to do that though, in a balanced way, as we also think about our economy and how we're going to continue to grow as a country and manage climate change at the same time," said Oliver. As a Member of Parliament, Oliver needs to hear from the community, he said, whether they're informed on the subject or they have specific concerns they want addressed. "I need to hear the views, I need to understand the different perspectives, so that I can represent Oakville in Ottawa. The Oakville MP said the town has some "incredibly rich thought leaders" when it comes to climate change, noting some of their ideas can be addressed nationally. "We heard tonight...for some people, (we) need to move way from fossil fuels and we should leave what we have in the ground. I know you would hear a very different view in Alberta about the importance of oil and fossil fuels to that economy," said Oliver. "Somewhere between those views is the right balance for Canada. That's the incredible job the minister, cabinet and our government has to work through." see Climate on p.13 Since 1967 upholstery & design THANK YOU OAKVILLE!
