Halton Community Legal Services offers free workshops for refugees sponsors Halton Community Legal Services is hosting free workshops to refugee sponsors, groups and organizations supporting refugees. "We want to share our expertise with sponsors on how things like housing arrangements and tenancies that were put in place pre-arrival can be carried forward to ensure stable, long-term housing," stated Colleen Sym, executive director of Halton Community Legal Services in a media release. The workshops will also explore how to overcome a lack of Canadian experience in job seeking and what is available if financial independence is not established by the end of the sponsorships. The legal clinic Mental Health Community Support Worker will lead a session on strategies to support refugees to meet the demands of settlement when they are dealing with the trauma of their recent experiences and are worried about family reunification. Representatives from the Halton Newcomer Strategy will also be present to share resources. Workshops to be held in September, October Workshops will be held in Oakville Sept. 15, 22, 29 and Oct. 6 from 7-9 p.m. at the Halton Regional Administration Centre, 1151 Bronte Rd. Halton Community Legal Services has had a long history of providing direct legal services to newcomers in Halton. The workshops are funded by the Oakville Community Foundation (OCF) through their Oakville Resettlement Fund. OCF started the fund in late 2015 to support the resettlement of Syrian refugees in Oakville.
