continued from p.1 The event, which begins with an official lighting ceremony around 7:30 p.m., is among 200 evening walks happening across North America each fall; with 11 official Canadian Light The Night walks, and dozens of volunteer-hosted community walks across Canada. Teams of families, friends and supporters come together to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada -- and give hope to people battling blood cancers and their families, and survivors, according to organizers. Pledged walkers carry illuminated lanterns to not only shed light on cancer and its devastating effects, but also showcase their relation to the cause. A white lantern is for blood cancer patients and survivors, a red one is for supporters and a gold one is for those walking in memory of a loved one lost. O'Hara, 43, will be carrying a gold one in memory of her mother and her cousin. Her mother had been battling non-Hodgkin's for four years before she died in her 50s because her body was too weak to fight off a bout of pneumonia. O'Hara described how the cancer wasn't considered to be aggressive initially, so her mother was given chemotherapy in the form of pills. It helped for a period of time, but the cancer came back quickly and aggressively, she said. This year's Light the Night walk coincides with National Blood Cancer Awareness Month. It begins at 5:30 p.m. and features live music and hot chocolate. Oakville resident Deb Richmond, who has mobilized a group of friends to help organize the walk, hopes to raise $40,000 to $50,000 in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. Since it's inception in 2014, the walk has raised $90,000. Participants who raise $100 or more will receive a lantern and T-shirt. "We were fortunate she was very strong so she got out and she actually took weekend passes home during that period, so she surprised everybody," said O'Hara. The cancer though, came back again. This time with more of a vengeance. Her mother went through radiation, but never fully recovered from it, she described. O'Hara hopes she'll be able to do her part to raise funds that will support breakthrough therapies for blood cancer patients, support services and events for patients and families and educational materials. She said she obviously has a vested interest in finding a cure, but notes although it's concerning she is at a higher risk of getting nonHodgkin's lymphoma, she tries not to think about it too much. Instead, she tries to live healthy and goes for her regular check ups with her doctor.
