Oakville student Hayley Nethersole was a leadership development co-ordinator with the Summer Camp at KSM. She said she has landed a job through the Canada Summer Jobs program over the last three summers and gained a wealth of experience. Through her role, she prepared older camp children to become volunteers, who in turn, then become camp counsellors. Over the summer, Nethersole has been increasing the responsibilities of senior campers, such as running a camp game, to build their enthusiasm and confidence. "It's really rewarding when you do stuff like that and they exceed your expectations and you see them interact with the younger kids," said Nethersole, who is studying psychology, French and cinema at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Campers have been taking part in community service initiatives too, such as picking up garbage around schools and hosting a tea party for seniors. Nethersole, an Iroquois Ridge High School graduate, said one of her proudest moments was observing campers brainstorm ideas while planning the seniors' tea party. "Seeing them serving tea, being polite and playing bingo with the older people in the community and then cleaning up and everything, they did it all so seamlessly and they were so mature and graceful about it," she said. "It was just really nice to see the culmination of all the things we've been teaching them about how to be leaders... it just melted my heart." Nethersole said her wages will also help pay for her university tuition and go on an exchange for a semester in the Netherlands.
