Halton a member of Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Cities Initiative continued from p.1 many groups and government organizations within the Great LakesSt. Lawrence River Basin, including the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, say Waukesha does not meet the exemption criteria. The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, of which Halton is a member, represents municipalities along the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence in Canada and the U.S. No `surplus' water in Great Lakes In his motion to council, Ward 1 Town and Regional Councillor Sean O'Meara pointed out that an International Joint Commission has determined there is no "surplus" water in the Great Lakes. He also said that the Waukesha decision may set a precedent for future diversions. "We all know the connectivity of our lakes and our waterways," said O'Meara. "When you take 30 million litres a day out of one of the lakes it impacts all the lakes." Ward 4 Town and Regional Councillor Allan Elgar seconded the motion and weighed in on the Waukesha decision. "I think we have learned over the years that we should not be moving water from one watershed to another," he said. "This is a fundamental change from what we should be doing and I hope they get this sorted out. We are all learning about water this summer on a very local level and this is not a good decision." In addition to officially objecting to the water diversion, council also voted to endorse the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Cities Initiative's opposition position. Copies of the Town's resolution were sent to local MPPs and MPs as well as Halton Region, the Provincial Minister of Energy and Climate Change, the Provincial Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, the Federal Minister of Natural Resources and the Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change. 5 | Thursday, September 8, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com inside today's Beaver www.insideHALTON.com Spotlight Beaver Trails Health 6 39 41 Artscene Sports Classified 43 45 49 Pharmasave, Metro, M&M Meats, Home Hardware, McKesson, Lastmans Bad Boy, Hoppers Pharmacy, Rona, Corbeil, Nature's Source, Real Canadian Superstore, Sobeys, No Frills, Lowes Canada, Food Basics, Samtack Inc., Promobiz Solutions, Michaels, Improve Inc., 2001 Audio Video, Scan Decor, Hudson's Bay Co., National Sports, Home Outfitters, Fortino's, Staples, Shoppers, Canadian Tire, Jysk - Bed & Bath, Mark's Work Wearhouse, Linen Chest, Pro Hockey Life, Sears, Longo's, Kohl & Frisch, State Farm, Walmart, Centennial Windows, Sleep Country, Rexall Pharma Plus, Brick Mattress, Petsmart, Pet Valu, Leon's Furniture, The Brick, Home Depot, Freshco, Maritime Travel, Best Buy Canada, Toys R Us For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online at www.oakvillebeaver.com *All flyers not necessarily delivered to all homes CONCEPT Outdoor Lighting Sale. an additional % LIGHTING Take save group up to 20%off We are the region's best lighting store latest lighting designs at exclusive pricing! 70 INJURED?
