Sheridan inks deal with China to make Bethune documentary Sheridan College has teamed up with China's Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre to create a musical based on the life of Dr. Norman Bethune. The historic co-development agreement was made official last week during a commercial signing ceremony in Shanghai, China. It was witnessed by Canada's Minister of International Trade Chrystia Freeland and signed by Michael Rubinoff, associate dean of Visual and Performing Arts at Sheridan, and Yang Shaolin, general manager of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. "This pioneering development opportunity will bring together a trio of exceptional theatre practitioners to create a musical about an extraordinary Canadian and his contributions to China," said Rubinoff. Signing part of Trudeau's state visit "I am honoured and proud that the signing of our co-development agreement was included as part of Prime Minister Trudeau's (recent) state visit to China." The musical on Bethune will focus on the Canadian doctor's lasting impression on the Chinese people through his voluntary medical service during turbulent times in the country in the late 1930s. The project will team composer and lyricist Neil Bartram and book writer Brian Hill with Chinese playwright Nick Rongjun Yu. Project sees well-known duo team up again Bartram and Hill are well-known for their co-creation of The Story of My Life and The Theory of Relativity, while Yu is deputy general manager of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre and the most produced living playwright in the country, according to a media release. The two creative teams of composers and writers will work together over the next few years to develop both English and Mandarin versions of the musical. The play will be workshopped at Sheridan's Canadian Music Theatre Project -- a kind of incubator for new musicals -- followed by a workshop in Shanghai. "The Canadian Music Theatre Project has made tremendous strides in fostering the development of new musicals in the five short years of its existence," said Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, president and vice-chancellor of Sheridan. "We're extremely proud of its contributions to the canon of musical theatre through the development of both talented performers and innovative new works." The Canada-China musical production is scheduled to premiere in 2019. 19 | Friday, September 9, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com From left, Michael Rubinoff, associate dean at Sheridan College, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Yang Shaolin, general manager of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. | Adam Scotti photo www.jwarchitect.com HOUSES OUR FIRST PASSION New · Additions · Cottages · Interiors · Landscape Thank you lovely Oakville for your continued confidence in us! 2016 Diamond Award Winner - Best Home Health Care Business APPLEBY SYSTEMS FIREPLACE, HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING CONTRACTORS OAKVILLE 905.825.1893 BURLINGTON 905.335.3203 2086 SpeerS rd., Oakville Come See Our SHOWROOM Mon - Fri. 8am 5pm; Saturday 11am 4pm www.applebysystems.ca Home Comfort From Our Family To Yours Walkers | Wheelchairs | Lift Chairs | Stair Lifts | Porch Lifts | Aids for Daily Living Adjustable Beds | Compression Stockings | Incontinence | Bathroom Safety | CPAP & More Delivering $ Sales Service Rentals Events Since 1967 in rebates & Discounts 2,350 UP TO SAVE $3000 Have a maintenance tune-up on your furnace or fireplace and receive up to $30.00
