Two days later they left nothing to chance. The Hornets scored four times in the first six minutes of the Provincial Women's Hockey League game on their way to a 7-2 rout of the Bluewater Hawks. Sarah Fillier scored goals 36 seconds apart to stake the Hornets to a 2-0 lead and Laura Cote also had a pair of goals in Oakville's win. Fillier opened the scoring 2:43 into the game and added a power-play marker shortly after. Cote made it 3-0 less than a minute later. Victoria Klimek gave the Hornets their fourth goal in a span of 2:29. Bluewater cut the lead in half, making the most of a 5-on3 advantage with two power-play goals in less than a minute midway through the second period. Madison Oakes, who made 21 saves for the win, would shut out the Hawks the rest of the way. Emma Maltais scored before the second period ended and Cote and Brooke Jovanovich added goals in the third. Last Friday, Jovanovich scored twice to spark a five-goal third period as the Hornets beat the Southwest Wildcats 6-1. Despite outshooting the Wildcats 30-10 in the first two periods of Saturday's game, the Hornets needed a shorthanded goal by Maltais late in the second to tie the game 1-1. Jovanovich then scored two minutes into the third to give Oakville the lead for good and added another three minutes later. The Hornets, who fired 29 shots on net in the third, kept adding to their lead. Fillier scored a power-play goal, Annie MacDonald made it 5-1 and Cote added a shorthanded goal. Lexie Adzija and Meaghan Hector each had a pair of assists while Oakes made 15 saves to win her PWHL debut. Boxer Dermott wins bout with Irish champion Emelia Dermott defeated her Irish counterpart while taking part in a boxing tour of Ireland recently. The 15-year-old Oakville resident is the Canadian Jr. C open female boxing champion in the 50-kilogram-or-less division. She and 10 other Ontario female boxers made the trip to Edenderry, Ireland, a town of 6,000. Dermott's opponent in Ireland was the current Irish Athletic Boxing Association champ Sarah Edge. The Canadian boxers took part in an intense one-week training camp with two gym sessions each day. Dermott, who is a Grade 11 student at Nelson High School, trains at Burlington's No Excuse Boxing and Fitness. She is back in Ireland next month for an international tournament, followed by a trip to the U.S. before provincial championships are held in November. Waterloo's Abby White tied the score and added the deciding goal in the shootout which ended 3-2 in Waterloo's favour. Sunday's match was one of eight Ontario Cup finals held at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan on the weekend. Katya Lopac put Oakville in the lead only 15 minutes into the match, scoring on a breakaway. Waterloo threatened to tie the score a number of times, only to be thwarted by Oakville netminder Jessica Urban. Waterloo's tying goal came on a corner kick that White chipped over Urban. Oakville advanced to the championship game with a shootout win over North Mississauga in August.
