Description
This is an example of the materials used by the young people who were the day camp leaders for the Oakville Recreation Commission summer day camps in the years 1957 to 1959. The collection also includes photographs taken of children and leaders at the day camp in August 1959, and of the leaders during their week of training at the old YMCA camp at Fisher's Glen on Lake Erie.

To see all the records, click on "Oakville Recreation Commission Day Camps" under "Groups of Related Records".

The photographs in this record show the manual prepared by the Community Programmes Branch of the Ontario Department of Education. The manual isn't dated so an approximate time frame for its use is shown as the date here.

This manual was prepared by a number of people, with two being local to Oakville: Jack Ross and Lloyd Minshall. Jack also served as Camp Director in our focus years of 1957-1959 and perhaps in other years as well. The entire list is reproduced in the "Full Text" section of the record.

Only 3 further manual pages are included here. To view these pages, click on "Pages" "Select".

Page 1 answers the questions, "What is Day Camping?", "What Can Day Camping Do For Children?".

Page 4 tells us the "Ideal Standards for the Day Camp Director", the "Ideal Standards for the Group Leader" and about "Staff Selection".

Page 5 discusses "Staff Training".

Selected pages from only one other of the program manuals kept by group leader Janet Lees have also been made into a digital record in this collection, this other one is her daily activity log.

Former group leader Janet Lees also donated her "Swimming Programme" manual from the Oakville Recreation Commission, and her copy of the "Playground Activities; Sports and Active Games" manual by the Community Programmes Branch of the Ontario Department of Education, c1951. These last two manuals have not been made into digital records but it might interest you to know the "Playground Activities" one starts off by warning about the overuse of baseball or softball during the August doldrum days and how a skilled supervisor will stimulate, teach and offer a well-balanced programme to continue camp enthusiasm even in August - the best for developing sound character.

All the manuals are available in the print "Oakville Day Camp" collection, kept in the TTHS archives at the old one-room schoolhouse, 2431 Dundas Street West, Oakville (at Palermo or Bronte Road and Dundas West).
Notes
Printed leadership materials are courtesy of JJanet (Lees) Timbrell, camp leader 1957-1959.

This is one of a series of photographs and memories of working as a leader at one of the Oakville Recreation Commission summer day camps in the late 1950's. To see all the records, click on "Groups of Related Records" "Oakville Recreation Commission Day Camps."
