Newell, D.Pod.M. Over 30 Years in Practice Q« Why do my heels hurt when I get out of bed in the morning and after sitting? A: You are likely suffering from a common foot problem called PLANTAR FASCIIITIS or HEEL SPUR syndrome. The pain comes from the main arch band of the foot pulling on the heel bone. Inflammation is present and sometimes calcification of the arch band occurs and this is called the "heel spur". The pain is usually worse upon rising - as the arch band tightens when we rest. Sometimes wearing firmly laced running shoes for a couple of weeks or so may be sufficient to eliminate the problem. In persistent cases the patient may need orthotic shoe inserts, physical therapy or cortisone injections. Athletes should not try to run off the pain or serious damage may result. The simplest way to answer this question is to explain that a mental illness is fundamentally a malfunctioning of the brain. Just as disorders of the heart or of the kidneys are illnesses, the brain is functioning abnormally when one has mental illness. As you can imagine the brain is an organ within our bodies that is extremely difficult to study. We have very recently developed technology that enables us to see how the brain functions under different situations. For example if someone is suffering from Depression we can now see ^differences in how that persons brain is functioning when compared with a brain of an individual who is not depressed. All mental illnesses have an underlying problem within the brain. The vast majority of these illnesses can be successfully treated. We have learned that the likelihood of one developing a mental illness depends on the persons genes. In other words people are born with the possibility that their brains may malfunction and it is not their fault if they become ill. Most of the time when one becomes ill there is a stress of some sort in their lives which profoundly affects them. These stresses may include the loss of a' loved one, the loss of a job, another physical illness, financial strain and many other stresses. The stress may trigger a change in the brain and this change could then lead to the mental illness. People can take courses or receive therapy to hejp them minimize the impact of the stress and this ultimately could decrease the impact on the brain and be a part of the recovery process. We should be very optimistic about recovery from a mental illness because no matter what one's stresses are in life or what brain changes occur we have developed excellent methods of treating these illnesses and are continuing to do so. Salim a Kassam Registered Chiropodist 905-845-2291 Q - I'd like to start a new fitness routine, but I find my knees and fe et tend to hurt with increased activity. Is there som ething that can be done fo r the pain? Becoming more active and fit is generally always good for your health. Pain however, isn't. There are many possible reasons for your pain, including alignment issues stemming from the foot, joint issues such as arthritis or even possibly an old trauma to the area, treatment for pain in the limbs when active can range from modifying the type of activity to realigning your walking style. Issues at the knee very commonly start at the foot level and can travel all the way up to the back. Custom made foot inserts, also known as orthotics, will realign your walking pattern and redistribute high pressure areas so as not to stress the various joints (ankles, knees, hips, back) throughout the lower limb. If pain is a cause of concern, your Chiropodist can provide you with a thorough lower leg assessment, specific shoe recommendations for your foot-type and individual treatment plans to help alleviate your pain. A: In a word, design. Design is truly what makes or breaks the basement you will either choose to spend time in or not. The design of the basement should be an extension of the rest of the home. Thus providing a continuous fl6w from the main floor carrying it right through to your unfinished storage space in the basement. Dr. Rosenblat D.D.S. 9 05-827-0301 Q; A a What causes dry mouth? W e certainly ta ke th e m o isture in o u r m o u th fo r granted! Q j What is the difference between a Cosmetic Surgeon and a Plastic Surgeon? A j Selecting a reputable, experienced professional who has been thoroughly trained in performing cosmetic procedures or surgery is the single most important factor in determining the success o f your treatment. There is no governing body to regulate who can call themselves a cosmetic specialist; therefore, the term can be used by a medical doctor who may have taken a weekend course in the procedure you are enquiring about. You will want to ensure that your plastic surgeon is board certified by the American Board o f Plastic Surgery in the U .S. or is a member o f T h e Royal College o f Physicians and Surgeons in Canada. I f the doctor or staff at the clinic you are consulting with are reluctant to answer your questions about credentials, be wary. The process begins with the expertise of a professional structural engineer who will aid you in the elimination of some, if not all of those annoying jack posts, or load bear ing walls. It-is from this point that the great room of the house begins to unfold. Open concept basements, that begin at the foot of the stairs, allows for multiple uses in one large space. Home theatres, bars, gyms and spas are just some of the ways people are utilizing their new found living space. Basements are no longer the cold un-inviting storage spaces they used to be. The basement has become a new dynamic living space in its own right. " Dry m outh is a result o f saliva glands in th e m outh not w orking properly and so less saliva is pro du ce d.
