8 - The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday January 18, 2006 MORE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR W hy change a w inning hand? During these weeks leading up to the election, there has been so much talk, about peo ple wanting to `change' the government that is in power. I don't really understand why. Our country is doing so well economically. The jobless rate is very low and so are the interest rates, and we are not at war. The Liberal government has a surplus, after paying down the years of debt that they inherited from the previous government. I thought that is what it is all about. Why is change wanted? That is what I would like to know. I have heard about all the `scandals' but are they really `scandals'? If you look up the word scandal, it doesn't really apply. Paul Martin has been exonerat ed of any blame by the com mission. It seems it was a few bad apples. Let's say there is a teacher that has a class that does very well every year. The teacher has been teaching for a very long time. Does this mean she/he is arrogant? Does this mean she should be fired? Does the teacher need to be `changed' when everything is going so well? Why does everyone want change when everything is great? There is another example of the positive effects of having a long-term government right next door to us in Mississauga. That city has been voted again for being the safest city in Canada. Remember change for the sake of change is never a good idea. And I know that other say ing `change is as good as a rest', but do we really want a country that is a t `rest?' Just a few thoughts from someone who could have voted if the government wasn't brought down so early. Thanks for reading this and I hope everyone who can vote, does. It is one of your rights as a Canadian. LAURA BALL, GRADE 12 Conservative rude to other candidates Was your reporter at the same allcandidates meeting that I was? I went to the Chamber of Commerce debate on Jan. 12 and what I witnessed was not what your reporter did. I saw three intelligent, calm, respectful, knowledgeable and courte ous women on the podium being criti cized and demeaned by Terrence Young all night. The absolute arrogance dis played by Mr. Young was incredible. The complete lack of decorum he displayed describing Ms. Brown's answer as "noise" and continually attacking the others' responses reminded me of what I hate about pol itics. It was a very worthwhile exercise indeed, however, as I also discovered from his pamphlet that Terrence Young was the Parliamentary Secretary to John Snobelen during the Harris years. As a teacher and a witness to the destruction to the education system I will certainly not be voting to send Terrence Young to Ottawa. Shame on you Mr. Young for think ing that , Oakville will respond favourably to an accusatory, attacking, critical and, rude performance. PEGGY JACKMAN Act of honesty warrants thank you I would like to thank Mike Dantonio for being an upstanding cit izen and returning to me my cell phone. It is a true pleasure when, you experience the honesty of a person who takes the time to find the person to return a lost item to. Thanks again.
