24 - The Qakville Beaver, Wednesday January 18, 2006 MOTORS ^Qakville Mitsubishi EVERYTHING AUTO By Joe Knycha Metroland Wheels Is the new Dodge Charger a muscle machine or a family car? A coupe or sedan? Sports car or grand tourer? Well, in a word yes. The many roles that the Charger will assume in all its guises are due more to its broad versatility than a case of con fused identity. DaimlerChrysler's newest spin off the wildly popular, full-size LX platform that spawned the Chrysler 300 sedan and Dodge Magnum wagon .will be many things to many people. In V6 livery (base SE and SXT mod els) it will be seen as an affordable and economical daily driver, able to haul a family of five and all their stuff. It grows more powerful and sporting with the Hemi V8 engine and performance upgrades in R/T format, and a full on autobahn stormer in Daytona R/T dress, with a more powerful Hemi engine, unique colour and paint schemes, and even more performance equipment and cosmetic detail. One thing the new Charger is not, despite its legendary name, is a throw back to the 1960s and 70s. The new car is a fully modern rendition of a venera ble nameplate that echoes the much romanticized muscle car era that pre dated emissions controls, electronic governance and the ability to round cor ners with purpose. The new Charger is a large car, with a vastly more spacious and wellappointed interior and four doors. Where the originals traveled best in a straight line, this is an able handler, especially in R/T and Daytona R/T trim, with brakes to match. The new "4-doc*r coupe" features bold front-end styling, a long hood and short deck with a fastback roof. The nose leans into the wind, the beltline drops as it moves rearward, then kicks up sharply in the rear door, drawing the eyes to the muscular quarter panels that emphasize the RWD. Inside, the driver views a sleek instrument panel with electrolumines cent, Viper-inspired circular gauges with white'faces highlighted by silver accent rings. Attention to detail throughout the cabin is evident with high levels of fit and finish. Steering effort is light and direct with only a slight vagueness detected on-centre. More than just a narrow focus mus cle car -- it's a sure bet to have broad appeal, with something for many tastes.
