MORE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The1Oakville'Beaver; W ednesday January 18, 2006 - 7 How candidates responded to call for assistance I am writing to inform the public of actions and non actions that were done over the Christmas holidays last month by our local fed eral election candidates con cerning my senior mother, (81 years old), who is living at one of Oakville's public nursing homes for three years now. Just days before Dec. 25, I was informed that my mother's rent at the home was increased from $963 per month to $1,270 per month and later on I was told that the rent increase was being backcharged from July 2005 until the present date. My mother has no assets at all and her only income is from the government pen sion plans and her total monthly income which includes her Guaranteed Income Supplement is just under $1,300 a month, leaving her with about $30 a month to live on after her rent payment. I sent out an urgent e-mail on Dec. 20 to our local candidates asking for any help they might be able to give. Here were the results: · Terence Young himself responded to my e-mail the next day offering his help including an offer to act as my mother's agent in nego tiating with the authorities involved. I received five emails from him along with a phone call to my home. He phoned and spoke with sev eral individuals who would be able to make any deci sions concerning my moth er's plight. He spoke with the administrator at my mother's nursing home and passed along a great deal of information to me that most likely would have taken me weeks or months to obtain by wading through the bureaucracy on my own. · Bonnie Brown's assis tant, Gail Smith, responded to my e-mail two days later with what appeared to be a form e-mail letter inform ing me that the nursing home my mother is living in is not in Bonnie Brown's riding and that they would forward my inquiry to Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh for a rent review request by him. · Gary Carr's assistant, Chrysta Collens, responded to my e-mail nine days later asking me for my phone number so Mr. Carr could discuss my concerns over the telephone, I informed Chrysta of my phone num ber on the same day I received her e-mail and as of the date of writing this letter, Jan. 11, I have yet to receive a phone call from Mr. Carr. · Garth Turner never responded to my e-mail as of Jan. 11. If actions speak louder than words then in my hum ble opinion, Mr. Young won this race at the starting gate. For the record, I am not affiliated with or a member of any political party. I ask the voters of Oakville to think about what our candi dates will not only say before, during, and most importantly after the elec tion but what they will do. GORD BRENNAN Conservative vote-step backwards To voters who believe in peace and equality for all Canadians. The Conservatives have stated they would; · Cancel the new National Childcare program although 84 per cent of Canadian families with children have both parties in the workforce. · Revisit the Missile Defence System putting at risk Canada's role in the world to make peace for all. " · Revisit same sex marriage with the possibility of mak ing gays and lesbians once again less equal in Canada. · Give tax cuts that favour the well off and contribute to a larger gap between the rich and poor. Please don't let this happen.
