The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), a non-profit public service organization, has named Halton the co-recipient of Canada's Regional Community Recycling Award. The RBRC commended the Region recently for its recycling efforts in its fifth annual Community Recycling Leadership Awards. "It is wonderful for Halton Region to be recognized:'again for its solid efforts in recycling batteries," said Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline. This is the second year Halton has been recognized for excellence in battery recy cling. In 2005, Halton residents recycled 5,622 kilograms of rechargeable batteries, which is almost 2,000 kilograms more than residents recycled the year before. "Through the participation of our resi dents, we have been able to demonstrate our leadership and commitment to environmental protection by providing waste diversion options that our community has readily embraced," noted Savoline. The amount of rechargeable batteries recycled in 2005 placed Halton Region as one of the lead ing battery recycling communities in Canada. Over the past two years, Halton has recycled a total of 9,332 kilo grams of rechargeable batteries. Batteries are collected at the Region's Household Hazardous Waste Depot, which also handles a wide range of other residential hazardous waste, such as paint, oil, pesticides and propane tanks. The depot is located at the Halton Waste Management Site, 5400 Reg. Rd. 25, and is open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Walk for Memories at Oakville Place Sunday The Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton will hold a Walk for Memories on Sunday at Oakville Place from 9 - 1 1 a.m., as part of January being Alzheimer Awareness Month.
