1 8 - The "Oakville Beaver, Friday January 27, 2006 Young Sunningdale voters side with Young By M m e Nadeau and Grades 5 - 6 students Sunningdale Public School tudent Vote 2006 was an exciting event at Sunningdale Public School. Since the announcement of the Jan.23 federal election, students from Grades 5 and 6 became more involved listen ing to the news, reading the newspaper, studying the polls, learning about the Oakville candidates, the party leaders, S the issues and platform of the parties, and the electoral process. Finally, on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 149 young voters went to the polls organized by a team of Sunningdale students. On Jan. 24, they (earned the results of their student voting and the federal election. They discovered that voting results can be very surprising when it is a confidential vote and when the poll clerk, scru tineers, deputy returning offi cer and myself were all sworn to secrecy. The winner in the Sunningdale vote was Terence Young, Conservative, (48), followed by Laura Domsy, Green Party, (38), Bonnie Brown, Liberal, (31) and Tina Agrell, NDP, (31). "It surprised me that so many peo ple said that they would vote Green before the election, but the Conservatives won at our school. On election night I was excited for two reasons; one, to find out.who won the federal election and two, to find out who won the student election," com mented Emily Vella. Deanna Lloyd was not so sur prised, "In our school vote, I wasn't surprised that the Green Party came second. There was a lot of commotion going on about that party. In the fed eral election I thought that the Green Party wouldn't do well because they weren't even invited to the debates and the media didn't pay much atten tion to that party. I think that the Green Party should take part in everything. I am really happy that the Grades 5 and 6 students at Sunningdale had the chance to vote because it helped us to learn how lucky we are to live in a democracy and what the election process is all about. I know we will all be ready for the real thing when we reach 18." Jasmine Harmina was also a Green Party supporter. "From the begin ning, I thought that the Conservatives would win (because everybody said they would vote for them), but I didn't even think that the Green Party would be in second place. Everyone says things like, T bet that the Green Party will turn off the electricity at 6 p.m. to conserve ener gy.' I was happy to know that the Green Party came in second, which means we've got a lot of people in our school that care about the environ m ent."
