The Oakvilfe'Beaver, Friday January 27, 2006 - 29 Parents issued transistor radio warning 40 years ago ON SA LE SATURDAY, JANUARY 28 TO FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2006 T he child that you see with the transistor radio glued to his ear is the child who cannot stand to be left alone with his thoughts and is a youngster who will have problems later in life, a Toronto psychologist said while speaking here last night. Dick Shooter, a psychologist at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, spoke to the parents at the second meeting of a series organized by the Oakville Home and School Council and the Halton branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. He said children must be able to live with, and reflect upon, them selves if they are going to be able to cope with the world around them. "Too often a child will work madly to keep himself occupied so that he own THE PAST does not have to face the conflicts within himself," he said. He added that the transistor radio blaring in his ear enabled him to do this effectively. "The teenager is going through a period of stress and strain and it is important you allow him to express himself and find out who he is," said Shooter during the meeting last night at W. H. Morden School. He asked the parents to accept their children for what they are and not force the average child into becoming a doctor of law or any child into going into a profession he will not be happy in. It is also important, he said, that the parent not force too much help on the child, and at the same time always remain as a steady and reliable harbour for the child to return to when he needs help. If you form too much tight control on the child you will develop a "mamma's boy" or in the case of girls, a girl who will come running home two days after her marriage. -Daily Journal-Record January 27, 1966 bulk barn* Natural ..1 7 6 / 1 0 0 g Suprem e f 9 8 Alm onds m m * P u re C h o c o la te C o v e re d .95/100g m j a a Almonds 4 blanched, roasted, salted or unsalted b .29/100g assorted flavours Dried Cranberries W ilkinson 5 1.19/100g Wine Gum s Gum m i B ears or W orm s a : v sweetened .55/100g .
