YMCA of Oakville's board of directors, members, volun teers, donors and staff last week celebrated the success of Give Kids the Chance, the organiza tion's second annual giving campaign. The program provides underprivileged youth with the opportunities to 'participate in programs at the YMCA, and the goal for 2005 was to raise $150,000 to that end. As Tim Clark, volunteer and chair of the Y's Giving Campaign announced, YMCA of Oakville surpassed that goal and raised a total of $152,003 in 2005 through everything from corporate donations and sponsorships to fundraising events, including car washes, softball tournam ents and magic shows. "The goodness of the Y keeps going on because of peo ple like you," Clark told the more than 40 members, volun teers and staff in attendance at last week's meeting. "I'd like to take the opportunity to thank publicly the donors to the Give Kids the Chance campaign. Without you, we're nothing, so thank you." Y CEO Bruce, Ireland stressed the charitable status of the YMCA. "This particular campaign is an extremely important part of the YMCA, and we really are in "We're not just an organization where we're asking people to buy a membership. People need support and this is something we need to do as an organization." Oakville Y CEO Bruce Ireland need of support," he said, adding that commitment to help those in need is part of the Y's mission. The YMCA began Give Kids the Chance to address the almost 10 per cent of kids in Oakville living below the pover ty line by providing fee assis tance for membership, child care, camp programs and free early years programs for par ents and young children. "We're not just an organiza tion where we're asking people to buy a membership," said Ireland. "People need support and this is something we need to do as an organization." For 2006, the Give Kids the Chance campaign has set a fundraising goal of $160,000. Almost 500 donors lent financial support to the cam paign last year, including five at the highest champion level: an anonymous donor, the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families Jump Start Program, * Ian and June Cockwell, D'Orazio Infrastructure Group and the Greater Toronto Sewer and Watermain Contractor's Association. To recognize those five champion sponsors, the Give Kids the Chance campaign awarded five students between the ages of 16-18 with educa tional bursaries. YMCA volunteers Libby Atlas, a basketball league vol unteer and coach, Lauren Box, a climbing and adventure cen tre volunteer, Michelle TonerCalmusky, a camp volunteer and pool attendant, Christine Cosentino, a climbing and adventure centre volunteer and Caitlin Cross, a camp coun selor and soccer coach were rewarded with bursaries last week. Toner-Calmusky was the lone student who chose to speak after receiving her award, and not only thanked the YMCA for the bursary, but also told those in attendance that the organization helped her get through the recent loss of her father. "To have this kind of is amazing," she said. "People at the Y, it's like a family. To be a part of that is just so special. "I just appreciate everybody so much and I don't think they hear that enough."
