Armstrong speaks at St. Mildred's The Oakville Beaver St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School (SMLS) host ed a meeting of student leaders and their staff advisors from the COSSOT group of schools, the Coalition of Single Sex Schools of Toronto and area, on Monday. The group meets two or three times a year to discuss issues of concern and interest to student leaders, to offer leadership training, and to facili tate contacts among the schools. There is also a "junior" COSSOT, which organ izes various social activities for students in the beginning years of high school. This was the first time SMLS had hosted the senior COSSOT group. After some warm-up activities, there was dinner and then speaker Sally Armstrong, an Amnesty International award winner, a mem ber of the Order of Canada, journalist, docu m entary filmmaker, author, hum an rights activist, and contributing editor for M aclean' s magazine. Armstrong has covered stories in the news of conflict all over the world from Bosnia and Somalia to Rwanda and Afghanistan. Her book: Veiled Threat - The Hidden Power o f the Women o f Afghanistan, was published by Penguin Books in 2002.
