The O akville Beaver, F rid a y F e b ru a ry 3, 2 0 0 6 - 19 Youths are nominated Junior Citizens Three Oakville residents are in the running to be named an Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year. Nominations were filed in November and nominees received a certificate of recognition from The Oakville Beaver. This week, up to 12 indi vidual final recipients and one group may be chosen as Ontario Junior Citizens of the Year. The selection will be announced by the Ontario Community Newspapers' Association (OCNA) at www.ocna.org. Among the trio of Oakville youths nominated was Kristen Thorpe. The 16-year-old received a good citizenship award in elementary school at Brookdale Public School because of her positive behaviour to both teachers and peers. Thorpe was a leader-intraining working with young children at a camp last summer and is teaching a synchronized swim class this winter as she is a parttime lifeguard for the Town of Oakville. The compelling reason that Thorpe was nominated however is because of her relationship with her dis abled 13-year-old sister, Allison. Allison requires total care and Thorpe manages to have a loving relationship with h er-- evidenced by the smile that lights Allison's face when Thorpe is around. Thorpe holds her sister on her lap to watch TV, reads her books and plays her music and can even administer medication, manage feeding, inhalation masks, lifting and changing. At T.A. Blakelock where Thorpe .is in Grade 11, Thorpe has been school sec retary during the secretary's lunches and supervises spe cial needs students during lunch hours -- a paid posi tion whose applicants must meet strict criteria. Thorpe is an avid reader, is on her school's swim team, has many friends, plays the flute and piano and earned her high school community service hours by the end of Grade 9 for her involvement with a reading program for young children at the public library. Another nominee is Caroline Diorio who has been a Sunday School teacher, a camp counselor, a youth representative on varorganize the Bronte Butterfly Foundation Gala and the duck race in down town Oakville. Since 1981, the Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards Program has recog nized the best in Ontario's youth. It is co-ordinated by the OCNA with the support of its 270 member newspa pers, Corporate Sponsor Tembec Paper Group, and many patrons including the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. The program strives not only to recognize the out standing young people who will be the recipients of the award, but also the hun dreds of others who repre sent the `good kids' we all Groups or individuals may be nominated. Nominees may be involved in worthwhile community service; special young people who are con tributing while living with a physical or psychological limitation; or individuals who have performed acts of heroism or bravery. Awards recipients may also be `good kids' who show a commitment to make life better for others and do more than is nor mally expected of someone their age. A panel of community newspaper publishers, edi tors and our sponsors will select the award recipients from all nominations received. Diorio is involved in the Halton Region Interfaith Council as corporate secre tary, and at school is on the debating team and is a co founder of PlayPals, an organization that connects local youths with those from Uganda. Diorio also volunteers at ErinOak, Serving Young People with Disabilities. The youth is also known for her abilities as chief baker and pastry chef for various family functions. An Oakville Trafalgar High school student, Diorio boasts an astounding resume. She has ability in languages including French, Spanish, German, Mandarin, Japanese and basic Latin. She lived in Australia and has traveled from Malaysia, Borneo, New Zealand and Fiji, to England, France, Mexico, Hong Korig, Singapore and Ireland. Diorio has been involved in marketing and helped raise $10,000 to send her school's Robotics team into competition, has participat ed in the Southern Ontario Model United Nations and helped plan and organize her school's dodgeball tour nament. The final Oakville nomi nee is Russell Baker who was a tireless worker on establishing Abbey Park High School's on-line com puter community and is a passionate leader for World Vision. Baker has also been involved at high school in co-ordinating a school-wide mentoring program and ini tiating an elementary tutor ing program. Baker was a business technology tutor at the for mer Queen Elizabeth Park High School and later co organized the 30-Hour Famine for Abbey Park High school last year. The youth also helped know, by presenting every nominee with a certificate of recognition from their local OCNA community newspaper. Any resident of Ontario, aged six to 17 years, is eligi ble to receive an Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award. Up to 12 individuals and one group will be recipients of an award presented by the Lieutenant Governor dur ing the OCNA convention in April.
