The O akville Beaver, Friday February 3, 2006 - 25 January is a stressful month for high school students By Kristen Campbell, Grade 12 Abbey Park Public School A s the holidays become a distant memory, res olutions are broken, and things are returned. People settle back into the routine of school and work glad to have had the rest. Some people find it enjoyable to get back into the routine. However, for a majority of high school students, this time back is one that they dread. Once the holidays are School News K ID SS P E A K over, the remaining few weeks of school are those for preparing for exams. All of the final summative projects worth 10 per cent of your mark need to be com pleted on time, and efficient ly. Without these completed, your mark will drop drastical ly. After a week or two of these massive projects, the dreaded time comes. Exams. Students will spend night after night staying up into the wee hours of the morning in order to get the marks they need. This time of year is especially hard on Grade 12 students who not only have exams to deal with. Being in Grade 12 also means that you need to get your university applications done. This year, the deadline was Jan. 11. This meant that on top of getting back into the swing of things and preparing for exams, you also have to decide what you want to do with your life. Do you want to go to Ryerson or Guelph? Ottawa or Carleton? This made the month of January even more stressful that it has been other years. Not only have you had the applications due, but scholar ship forms are also constant ly being due. Many students have not had the time to fill out many of these forms because they have had too many summatives to finish on time, and have been studying all night for exams. You need refer ence forms, which many teachers have been too busy to do, and you have essays to write for these scholarships, as well as some for. your teachers. For those students want ing to pursue and education in the United States, an SAT was required. This meant evsn more studying and wor rying about how you will do on top of exams and applica tions. However, soon this rush will die down. Exams are now over, and applications have been long due. The next step is just find ing out whether you get accepted or not. Sadly, you have a long window to wait. The univer sities send out acceptances between February and April. So although the hustle and bustle is almost finished, f the waiting has just begun.
