The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 8, 2006 - 31 Cupids Against Cancer Feb. 11 The annual fundraising event Cupids -Against Cancer takes place Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Oakville Conference Centre. * More than 300 guests are expected to enjoy dinner, dancing to live music by rhythm -and-blues band Mona's Boys, gourmet dinner, silent auction, prize raffle, casino games and much more. Organizers say Cupids Against Cancer makes for a perfect Valentine's night out that benefits others at the same time. The event was first held in February 2004, a mere week after the death of 17-year old Katy McDonald as a way to "put action behind the loss" and raise $10,000 as welh In 2005, $15,000 was raised. Tickets cost $60 each in advance online ($70 at the door) or $30 for students (not available online) and can be obtained by visiting www.cupidsagainstcancer.com. This site also includes more information and links. Potential sponsors and those wishing to donate to the silent auction are also encouraged to make contact. This year's beneficiaries are the Canadian Cancer Society and the On the Tips of the Toes Foundation, which provides wilderness therapy for. teenagers living with cancer. While many fundraisers target research, Cupids Against Cancer focuses on support activities for often overlooked teens. Four years ago, McDonald was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, touching off a terrible chain of events that culminated in brain surgery to remove one tum our while a second growth was simply too deeply embedded to be excised, She turned just 17 in November 2003 and died the following February, Her passing prompted fundraising concerts organized by teenaged friends, while the students of B urlington's Nelson High School (where Katy studied after attending Oakville's Lome Skuce and Montclair) raised $5,000 for On the Tips of the Toes Foundation. jH I m -t.
