22 - The O akville Beaver, Friday F e b ru a ry 17, 2 00 6 Teen services librarian receives provincial leadership award The Oakville Public Library's Teen Services Librarian, Shauna Clinning, is the 2006 recipient of the prestigious Ontario Library Association (OLA) Leadership in Youth Services Award. Each year, this award is given by the OLA to one person who has demonstrated exceptional service to young, adults in public libraries. "Any and all awards are great to receive, especially if they represent hard work and help to fulfill a need within a community," said Clinning. "It's great recognition for the Oakville Public Library (OPL) and the wide variety of programs and services available to young people in Oakville." Clinning has worked tirelessly for local teens. She has made a sig nificant contribution to youth serv ices by establishing meaningful con nections between youth and the Oakville Public Library. She has established specific pro grams and services for teens in order to raise awareness of the vast number of free resources available to youth at all library locations including electronic resources avail able through the library's home page. Through the Teen Advisory Group (TAG) and Youth Online pro gram, she has improved service to young adults as well as with the newly created Teen Area and Teen Book Club. Clinning said it' s a fabu lous opportunity to work closely with Oakville's teens in the TAG group meetings; it' s something that continuously gives her a fresh per spective on her role at the library. `I 've been impressed by both the readiness and willingness of TAG members to voice their suggestions for youth services at the library. Anyone working with these young people would have a great deal of respect for their well-thought out opinions and ideas. I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them and watch them develop as young adults," she said. Clinning provides dedicated youth advocacy, is actively involved in the library profession, and she is innovative in her service delivery and focuses attention on the impor tance of services to youth in the library and the wider community. The library has had very positive feedback from the teens who haye joined TAG, the book club, or partic ipated in last fall's writing contest. "Some comments I've,,received are: `I've made many new friends this way'... `it is a great way to meet people and freely discuss your opin ions onJbooks and their subject mat ter.' We include everyone and there is no right or wrong," she noted. A sub-committee comprising members of Ontario Public Library Association's (OPLA) Child and Youth Services Task Force and two other members of OPLA made the selection. The committee reviewed all nominations based on the crite ria and made their recommendation to the OLA Board of Directors through the Ontario Public Library Association Council. Clinning received her award at the Public Library Awards dinner on Feb. 2 in conjunction with the OLA' s annual Super Conference.
