The Oakville Beaver, MORE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Keep West Oak Trails school dual track As a result of a recent amendment to a draft of the Capital Strategic Plan (CSP) for a new public elementary school in Upper West Oak Trails, tax payers will be funding a single track, French immersion school. This will exclude the hundreds of neighbourhood children who thought that they would be able to attend this new school slated for completion in September, 2007. It would seem that the French Immersion community wants its own school, regardless of how many young, neighbourhood children are otherwise overlooked. The neighbourhood is rallying to change the amendment back to a dual-track school, which would allow French im mersion and English stream students to attend the same school. While this should satisfy both communities, the French immersion community isn't accepting. Apparently separatism is alive and well and living in West Oak Trails. Somewhere, somehow, the French immersion community has lost sight of the fact that French immersion is an optional program and not a pri vate school. The Halton District School Board has never built a school for a program before. Why would it start catering to special interest groups now? Local school board Trustee Susan Sheppard is supporting the French immersion community. Sadly, she has lost sight of the needs of her entire ward and is instead focusing on the small minor ity, those that want a "private" education in English, with French as a sec ond language, yet want to ride on the coat tails of the taxpayer. Sheppard is supported by her on going alliance of five other trustees that seem to have unbreakable con trol over school board issues. Clearly, there appears to be a lot of back scratching going on, as this group of six is impenetrable. Sadly, this is all being done at the cost of the neighbourhood children. The decision will affect the whole community as we continue to bus our children right past this new school, where apparently they are not wel come. And our trustee is doing nothing to help them.
