Visit our showroom COMMENT Celebrating Georgetown's past On June 26, I joined Mayor Rick Bonnette, members of Town Coun- cil, Catholic School Board Trustee and local historian Mark Rowe, and our MP Michael Chong, at a very special event celebrating our local history and heritage. The Ontario Heritage Trust, an agency of the Government of On- tario, partnered with the Town of Halton Hills, the Halton Hills Pub- lic Library Board, and the Esquesing Histori- cal Society to dedicate and place a provincial plaque outside the Li- brary and Cultural Cen- tre recognizing "The Founding of George- town." The text of the plaque briefl y summarizes how the community of Georgetown came into existence, and some of the most signifi cant milestones in its history. I was honoured to bring greet- ings, and spoke about the outstand- ing community spirit Georgetown is known for across the province, and the dedicated and enthusiastic community organizations I've been privileged to work with during the past six years. Speaking of the past, I added that it is the responsibility of our gen- eration to work together to build on the community legacy we've inher- ited, and be responsible custodians for the next generations that fol- low. Thanks again to all who attended or were involved. • • • The Liberals at Queen's Park have downloaded the full cost of repair work to provincial highways through built-up communities. For as long as I can recall, the Ministry of Transportation's Con- necting Link program paid for up to 90 per cent for these kinds of highway maintenance projects, for example, on Highway 7 through Acton and Georgetown. The Connecting Link program was recently cancelled without any advance notice or consultation. Negatively affected are as many as 77 municipalities across the province. If the Wynne govern- ment wants to throw out a partnership with local government that has worked well for years, the full cost of these needed local high- way projects will have to borne by the local prop- erty taxpayer. On May 28, I com- plained about this pro- vincial downloading in a speech in the Ontario Legislature. I am prepared to work with our municipal councils in Wellington- Halton Hills to make the Liberals listen. • • • With the Ontario Legislature in its summer recess, I will be working in our Wellington-Halton Hills pro- vincial riding offi ce, attending com- munity events, and out and about meeting and listening to your con- cerns. The various activities, included bouncy castles and various games, and a performance by the choral group 'Vie et Lumière', one of the groups who provides music at the church's masses.
