27 | Thursday, September 22, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Fall Registration Instilling children with a love for hockey, the Minor Oaks Hockey Association is preparing for its upcoming registration for the 2016/2017 season. In previous years, Minor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA) offered initiation programs for children ages five and six, but this year, has expanded the program to include four-year-olds. "We listened to the feedback from players and parents," said Ann Legault, vice president for the Minor Oaks Hockey Association's initiation program. "It was determined that they wanted to see a program for the younger students, more of a learn to skate, learn to play type program, so we have incorporated the program for younger students into the initiation program." The new program geared towards four-year olds will be known as the Junior Timbits and is geared to allow new skaters and players to build their confidence as well as their skills on the ice. Recognized for its programs across Ontario, MOHA offers a cross-ice program, which allows students to play on a much smaller surface to increase confidence and allowing children to get more touch time with the puck. Learn to skate with Minor Oaks Hockey Association The IP program, geared for students five and six years old also allows children to utilize the benefits of the cross-ice program. The most skilled students from this age group can be entered into the PreTykes program, allowing them to get ice time on the full rink. In order to make sure that coaching is consistent and constructive, MOHA has a head instructor who works with all of the volunteer coaches to ensure that each child learns the fundamentals. Each week the head instructor sends out learning plans to the coaches, and works with them on ice every other week. For students who are new to the Initiation program with MOHA, the program offers an equipment package to help alleviate the cost of the sport. New students are able to obtain, and be properly fitted for, all needed equipment for $99. "This package is great for our first-time players," said Legault. "It includes everything right down to the tape for their sticks, so when they leave their fitting session, they're ready to walk out on to the ice. It helps to relieve the financial burden from mom and dad, and gives some students, who previously would not have been able to, the chance to play." While there is no firm deadline for registration, most students will be evaluated in the upcoming weeks. The IP and Pre-Tyke programs will be evaluated on Saturday Sept. 24, and the Junior Timbits will be scheduled for the weekend of Advertorial October 15 and 16. Online registration is closed, but parents looking to get their children involved can register in person at the MOHA office, located at 2526 Speers Rd.
